The Importance of Community

Being a part of a community is one of the most special and powerful parts of the human experience.  Community can be found through where we live, shared interests, our identities, our jobs, friendships, families, and any space we feel truly seen and understood. Spending time with like-minded people can help bring a sense of belonging, help deepen our empathy for others, and push us outside of our comfort zone.  A healthy community brings comfort when it's needed most, strength in times of weakness, and a reminder that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves.


We want to take a moment to reflect on and show gratitude for our communities and the greater communities around us. We recognize that many are  facing significant uncertainty, harm, and fear right now. In these moments it's natural to feel overwhelmed or helpless. Being surrounded by a community reminds us that we are not alone, have others we can turn to when we need it, and a power to show up for others in our communities during moments of uncertainty.  


Community brings connection and love. During shared laughs and moments of joy, the people around us remind us that we are in this together. Love shows up through understanding, mutual support, and small acts of kindness. There is strength in showing up for your community, allowing them to show up for you, and then showing up for others. There is gratitude to be found in the peace, resilience, and love we receive from our communities.

With so many people and communities facing fear and injustice, it can be easy to get overwhelmed or feel hopeless in how to help. (Right there with you!)


Here are a few big and small ways to show up for others:


Give Directly:

  • Donate to local food banks or charity organizations focused on vulnerable populations.

  • Contribute money to local nonprofits, shelters, and mutual aid groups.

  • Support small businesses owned by people from underserved communities.

  • Help organize drives or fundraisers.

     

Show Up With Your Time:

  • Volunteer at food banks, shelters, or community clinics.

  • Tutor, mentor, or help at local schools.

  • Assist at legal aid or resource events.

  • Attend protests.

     

Use Your Voice for Change:

  • Contact elected officials!

  • Sign petitions or attend local meetings.

  • Support policies that protect and uplift marginalized communities.

     

Share Resources:

  • Spread the word about fundraisers, relief efforts, and support services.

  • Share accurate information about where people can get help.

     

Stay Connected:

  • Check in on neighbors who may be isolated.

  • Help with errands, childcare, or appointments.

  • Offer a listening ear to someone going through a hard time.

  • Believe their lived experiences.

 

Care for Yourself Too:

  • Set boundaries around how much you take on.

  • Take breaks from the news and social media when needed.

  • Rest, nourish your body, and prioritize sleep.

  • Seek your own support — from friends, community, or a therapist.

  • Remember: you don’t have to do everything to make a difference.
